Yeah. I know. I am just as surprised as you to see the late Virgil Abloh‘s name popped in a new collaboration and even more so associated with the Masters of the Universe toy line.
The Masters of the Universe c/o Virgil Abloh “TOY” Figures collection is not born after the fashion icon’s passing. It started in early 2021 when the visionary Abloh lent his vision to an artful collaboration to result in what you see here today.
Virgil recreated iconic characters from MOTU, including He-Man, Skeletor, Battle Cat, and Skelegod, in his favorite shade: taupe (grey with a tinge of brown). All four figures are presented in different neutral monochromatic hues, turning what essentially toys into fantastic-looking art pieces. And they are still poseable which is effing cool!
Along with new shades, the figures feature text-based interventions that recontextualize the figures and “allow people to look at these iconic toys in a new light.” TBH, I have no idea what that means. All I know is that if you are a super fan, this series is a must-have.
The taupe collection of the figures from the Masterverse is the first of Virgil Abloh’s two-part collab with Mattel’s MOTU that will be available on October 21, 9 AM PT, priced at US$50 and up.
