Because there will be a day in the apocalyptic future when AI plays all our sports for us, and we just enjoy them from the comfort of our Matrix pods, b2studios decided to take a roll at teaching AI how to bowl. You may recall b2studios previously attempting to train an AI Spider-Man how to web-swing. Is it a better bowler than a web swinger? Not at all.
After some initial programming, like creating the AI humanoid and providing a reward function for successful bowls, the bowler is released upon the lanes to start learning how to throw the ball. Around 3:20, you can see him just beginning to understand, pursuing an early technique that can only be described as floundering. Imagine a fish trying to bowl, and you have a pretty good idea of what it’s like.
Eventually, the AI bowler is able to finish a full 10-frame game with a score of 135. For reference, that’s about my average as well. Although I’d like to think I look a little more dignified than the AI dude doing it – even though I probably don’t.
