Oppo Find N3 Announced, Bids Farewell To The Unique Form Factor It Started

It’s easy to forget what makes you who are once you have succeeded. OnePlus fell victim to this and has at one point lived long enough to see itself become the very thing it seeks to destroy (flagship). Turns out, OnePlus’s parent company ain’t much different. It set out to change the folding phone world with the Oppo Find N. The Find N wowed the market with its handy, form factor folding, and overall refreshing look. But after two devices with that form factor, Oppo has finally caved into the norm.

The new Oppo Find N3 Flagship Folding Phone has adopted the longish form factor when closed. The width does not differ by a lot. It is now 143.1 mm open and 73.2 mm closed (the N2 was 140.5 mm open and 72.6 mm closed). But it is very much taller now, coming in at 153.4 mm versus the N2’s 132.2 mm. It is also a tad heavier too at 239-245g as opposed to 233-237g on the Find N2.

As a boon, it is less chunkier – thanks to the thinner profile. When open, the camera side measures 5.8 or 6 mm depending on the material, while the secondary display side is just 5.9 mm. When closed it is 11.7 or 11.9 which, again, depends on if the back cover is of glass or vegan leather. It is significantly thinner than the last-gen Find N which has a whopping 7.4 mm thickness on the camera side and 7.1 mm over at the secondary display side. When closed, the Find N2 comes in at a chunky 14.6 mm.

Clearly, the profile can be quite a turn-off for some even more so now that flagship foldables spoiling consumers with thinner and lighter foldables. I still think the original Find N and its immediate follow-up were adorable. But never mind what I think because it looks like this will be the blueprint for Oppo’s foldables moving forward. But you’d be getting a larger display when opened up.

The new Find N is blessed with a 120 Hz 6.31-inch OLED external display with a 2,848 x 1,116 resolution and it opens up to reveal a 1-120 Hz 7.82-inch OLED display with 2,440 x 2,268 pixels. The displays have a peak brightness of 1,400 nits. Speaking of screen, Oppo claims that it has eliminated screen creases with its industry-leading innovative hinge. But crease or no crease, that is for an OCD like me to be the judge.

Under the hood, it benefits from Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (obviously), along with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. And then there is, of course, the Hasselblad camera system.

The new Find N3 boasts a triple camera system that is powered by super smart algorithms. The setup includes a 48 MP ultra-sensing wide-angle camera featuring Stacked Pixel Architecture that eliminates sensor size restrictions and stores 140% more light information which Oppo claims results in “unparalleled clarity, vibrant colors, and exquisite detail presentation.” The camera system further touts a 64 MP Ultra-sensing Periscope Telephoto camera that offers up to 3x optical zoom, and a 48 MP Ultra-wide camera.

Both EIS and OIS are present to ensure smooth video recording. But for those fixated on resolutions, you may want to know that the videoing maxes out at 4K/60, and Slo-Mo is up to 1080p/240. The videoing features also include movie mode, 4K time-lapse, 1080p/30 dual-view video, as well as Dolby Vision video which supports both 4K/30 and 1080p/30.

Other noteworthy specs include support for fingerprint and facial recognition unlocking, dual SIM (nano + eSIM), 5G (of course), tri-band wireless (2.4, 5.1, and 5.8 GHz), Bluetooth 5.3, BT LE, BT LE Audio, USB Type-C interface, NFC, positioning (Beidou, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS), and a 4,805 mAh battery that supports 67 W SUPERVOOC 2.0, SUPERVOOC, VOOC 3.0, and PD3.0.

The new Oppo Find N3 for the international market will be offered with 16 GB + 512 GB configuration, priced at a cool S$2,399 (don’t ask why it is in SGD), which works out to be US$1,747 based on the going rate. Meanwhile, in China, it is available in 12 GB + 512 GB and 16 GB + 1 TB configurations, with a starting price of 9,999 yuan [CH] (roughly US$1,367).

I am not sure why the discrepancy in pricing. Possibly due to the crazy tax structure for imports in Singapore. As for the pricing in China, well, 10K in China is considered a super high-end device.
