There are sports cars and there are sports cars that look fabulous even more than two decades later. The 993-generation 1997 Porsche 911 Remastered by Gunther Werks is one such automobile and it is going under the hammer at the Monterey sale organized by RM Sotheby’s.
The 1997 Porsche 911 Remastered by Gunther Werks not only presents car collectors the opportunity to acquire an iconic Gunther Werks creation but also one in “as-new” condition with under 50 miles (80 km) on the odometer.
The 1997 Porsche 911 Remastered by Gunther Werks is one of the most comprehensively enhanced Porsche 911s ever built and one of just 25 examples restored and remastered by Gunther Werks.
Under the hood (the rear hood, that is), it has a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 4.0L flat six-cylinder engine that was rebuilt from the standard 3.6L flat-six.
The Remastered engine has an extensive list of forged internals and race-spec equipment, including a two-stage MoTec engine management system, individual throttle bodies (!), and a custom intake design based on the intake plenum of a 996-series Porsche 911 GT3.
The result is a naturally aspirated, air-cooled 4.0L flat six-cylinder engine that is said to produce “well north of” 400 horses and generate over 300 lb-ft (407 Nm) of torque.
The power is put to good use at the wheels through a Getrag G50 six-speed transaxle with stronger internals, a lightened flywheel, and a clutch borrowed from a 997.2 GT3 RS, which enables this modern classic to sprint from naught to 60 mph (97 km/h) in under 4 seconds.
While the weight is not offered, we believe it should be significantly lighter than stock because it boasts an extensive integration of carbon fiber outside and inside. According to Gunther Werks, 80% of their Remastered 911’s interior is bespoke while the rest is replaced with brand-new Porsche equipment.
Gunther Werks aside, the 1997 Porsche 911 itself has special significance because the 993-generation of the 911 was the last of the air-cooled flat-six powered sports car, thus making the Porsche 911 993 produced from 1994 to 1998 one of the most sought-after models.
The particular example that will be going on the block is the “Carbon Noire Commission” which is finished in an exquisite mixture of carbon fiber and black.
The hood, roof, and ducktail engine lid have been left in exposed carbon fiber, while the rest of the body is finished in a bespoke blend of colors with gold flakes incorporated into the metallic pearlescent finish. The Brembo brake calipers and the 18-inch Gunther Werks wheels are custom colored too.
The 1997 Porsche 911 Remastered by Gunther Werks will go under the hammer at the Monterey sale happening from August 17-19, 2023. It is expected to fetch between US$1,100,000-US$1,300,000. Meanwhile, you may learn more about this delightful modern classic at rmsothebys.com.
