Previously seen in 2021 as a giant photobooth-sized system, Google’s Project Starline is a telepresence communication system that renders both parties in 3D and in real time. And now they’ve shrunk the system to just the size of a television, making it a lot more feasible as far as space is concerned. The future nears!
The system was designed to make users feel as if the person they’re communicating with is actually sitting across from them during their conversation. This smaller iteration “doesn’t require the special array of infrared light emitters and cameras…instead, the new prototype uses ‘new AI techniques’ that allow Starline to rely on ‘a few standard cameras’ instead.” That AI – always showing up in today’s technology! Can you even make a new product these days without incorporating AI? Maybe underwear. MAYBE.
Is this the future of teleconferencing? Who knows. Although I feel like this technology might have a greater impact on personal communication than business use. Like for seeing your long-distance family and friends. But for business calls? I already see more than enough of my coworkers through a webcam, and I’d prefer I don’t feel like they’re right there in the room with me.
