As expected, yesterday, the Chinese handset maker Vivo revealed its 2nd-generation folding and third folding phone model Vivo X Fold2 featuring ZEISS optics. The new Vivo X Fold2 boasts a lightened design, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, and 120 W fast charging (and 50 W wireless charging).
The new Vivo X Fold2 folding phone is significantly lighter at 278.5-279.5g (vs the first-gen’s 311g) and it is very much thinner at 5.95 mm when open and 12.9-13.2 mm when closed. For reference, Vivo’s first folding phone measures 6.28-7.4 when open and 14.57-14.91 mm when closed. But Huawei Mate X3 remains the king of light and thin folding phones for now.
The folding mechanism on the new Vivo X Fold2 features an aerospace-grade FS54 high-strength carbon fiber hinge bracket and a Seiko integrated hinge design to achieve durability and a fold with a 5 mm diameter water drop-shaped inner fold. This hinge also supports opening at multiple angles between 60 to 120°, and it is rated for 400,000 folds.
The new Vivo fold continues to rock a feature that not many Android phone has and that is a physical slider for quickly going into silent mode. Interestingly, the new fold also boasts a new hybrid back cover featuring faux leather and glass which is cool if you never going to use a case.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip features an octacore Arm Cortex-X3 processor with a max clock speed of 3.2 GHz and Adreno 740 GPU.
The main display is a Hz 2K+ 8.03-inch E6 LTPO 4.0 display with 1,800 nit brightness while the secondary display is a 120 Hz 2K+ 6.53-inch E6 display with 1,600 nit brightness. Both displays support HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. The device is outfitted with not one but two 3D ultrasound fingerprint sensors, one on each display.
The X Fold2 has a now-popular circular camera module design. On it is a triple camera setup comprising a 50 MP camera (1/1.49-inch IMX866 sensor, f1.75, OIS), a 12 MP super wide-angle camera (IMX663 sensor, f2.0, 108° FoV), and a 12 MP “professional portrait” camera (1/2.93” IMX663 sensor, f1.98).
The ZEISS-touched imaging system features ZEISS Cinematic Mode for recording pro-style 2.39:1 film format as well as ZEISS portrait mode featuring pro-grade bokeh.
It has two 16 MP front-facing cameras (f2.45), one on each display. Imaging is bolstered by Vivo’s self-developed V2 image processing chip. Vivo said in no-light environments, it could become a “night vision camera” of sorts with ultra-low noise.
Other notables include 8533 MHz LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, dual cell 4,800 mAh battery, supports wireless Hi-Fi, triple mic setup, stereo sound speaker system, NFC, VC liquid cooling with up to 2,558 mm2, face recognition, built-in positioning (GPS, AGPS, Beidou, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS), and it runs on Android 13 overlaid with OriginOS 3 UI.
The new Vivo X Fold 2 folding phone can be ordered in China now in a choice of 12+256 and 12+512 configurations, starting at 8,999 yuan [CH] (US$1,306).
