Motorola Moto G Power 5G Smartphone: 5G Power For Just US$300

Believe me when I say most smartphone buyers will not be drawn to the promise of 5G because they expect it to be a standard today. Well, unless it is a Huawei phone that we are talking about. So I am a little baffled when Motorola emphasizes 5G on its latest smartphone by literally putting 5G into the model name: Motorola Moto G Power 5G (stylized as motorola moto g power 5G).

I know right. It couldn’t be more literal, even more than say, Realme 10 Pro 5G. But yes, moto has a new super-budget device and it is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 930 SoC featuring an octacore processor with up to 2.2 GHz clock speed that enables it to unleash its “powerful 5G performance”.

Unless you download a lot of stuff or stream videos while on the go, you probably don’t quite care if it is speedy 5G or not. If anything, users should be more concerned about coverage and quality of the signal when, say, underground or in a subway. Just saying…

I think the real selling point here is affordability. It will cost just 300 bucks when it hit the shelves tomorrow (April 13) but more on that in a minute.

For 300 dollars, you get a 120 Hz 6.5” FHD+ LCD display, 6 GB, 256 GB of storage expandable up to 1 TB using a microSD card, stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support, a 5,000 mAh battery good for up to 38 hours of battery life, a 16 MP selfie camera, and a 50 MP camera system featuring Quad Pixel technology accompanied by 2 MP Macro Vision camera and a 2 MP depth sensor.

In addition, you get features like a fingerprint sensor, face unlock, the usual suite of sensors, Bluetooth 5.3, dual-band WiFi (it’s WiFi 5, though), the usual suspect of positioning (GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, etc), a USB 2.0 port with Type-C interface, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. There’s no NFC and wireless charging is not present either.

The phone further touts a bunch of security features offered by the new Moto Secure App powered by ThinkShield which you create a PIN-protected Secure Folder to hide select apps and files, minimizes risks when connecting to public Wi-Fi and cell networks with Network Protection feature, control your lock screen options with Lock Screen Security, or activate PIN Pad Scramble. Finally, you can monitor and manage all of this and more with the Privacy Dashboard. Out of the box, the device runs on Android 13.

The new Motorola Moto G Power 5G will be available unlocked at Best Buy, Amazon.com, and Motorola.com starting April 13 with an MSRP of US$299.99. Up North, it will be available unlocked at motorola.ca in the coming months.
