Cyberpunk taxidermist and YouTuber Yi Zhizhu decided to mod a deceased Hercules beetle (Dynastes Hercules) into a realistic mechanical model using a bunch of small watch parts and springs and lights, and other pieces. If you scroll down, there’s a video documenting that process, the entirety of which I thought was pretty fascinating to watch. I mean, unless you have an aversion to bugs, then it’s probably a nightmare.
In addition to several lighting effects, the finished model even has wings that flap and a horn that raises and lowers when its power is turned on. I was not expecting that. Of course, I wasn’t expecting anybody to mod a dead beetle into a cyberpunk model either, yet here we are.
I’ve always been fascinated by large beetles and have several life-size models of different rhino beetles on display in my office, although I don’t have any actual dead bugs in my collection. I do have several in the corners of my house, along with a bunch of dust bunnies, though, much to my wife’s dismay.
