Many of you probably never heard of TECNO until recently. It is a Chinese tech company whose phones are pretty huge in some countries in Africa. So, TECNO isn’t a noob when it comes to making phones. However, it is a noob to the MWC which made its debut this year bringing along its first foldable smartphone, PHANTOM V Fold, along with SPARK 10 Pro “selfie phone” and its newest laptop (yep, it also has laptops too), MEGABOOK S1 2023.
Undoubtedly, the folding phone is the ultimate star of the show for TECNO. Interestingly, with the reveal of the TECNO PHANTOM V Fold, it marks the first folding phone to be powered by a MediaTek chip and this instance, it is the Dimensity 9000+ flagship chip born out of the 4 nm process. I believe it is also the first folding phone to rock a curved secondary display which is 6.42” diagonally.
Meanwhile, the main screen is an “ultra-flat” 7.85” item. Both screens are LTPO and variable refresh rate displays that peak at 120 Hz. The TECNO PHANTOM V Fold adopted an innovative aerospace-grade drop-shaped hinge which it claims to be a “virtually seamless and crease-free”. TECNO said the screen crease is less than 0.11 mm. It is hard to visualize how minimal (or not) it is, TBH.
The hinge boasts a fixed-axis rotate and slide technology, featuring an in-house developed so-called “reverse snap structure” which it said increases the structural stability. The hinge is tested to over 200,000 folds.
Primary imaging duties are carried out by an “ultra-clear” 5-lens camera system which includes a 50 MP 1/1.3” sensor main camera with a super light-sensitive custom sensor, a 50 MP portrait camera, and a 13 MP 120° ultra-wide angle camera. Meanwhile, it has two front-facing cameras. There is a 16 MP item on the main display and a 32 MP UHD “sub-screen camera” (under display camera?).
Other notables include 12 GB LPDDR5X, 256/512 GB UFS 3.1, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, dual stereo speakers, a 5,000 mAh Super Battery with 45 W flash charging that fully charges in 55 minutes or less, and innovative software to let you maximize the use of its large screen estate including split screen with one finger swipe, parallel windows and more.
It is not clear when the TECNO PHANTOM V Fold will hit the shelves and for how much. Meanwhile, you may learn more HERE.
