Leica Camera has ventured into the projector territory. The German high-end camera maker has revealed its first Ultra Short Throw (UST) projector, simply called Leica Cine 1.
But projection isn’t new to Leica. It has been around for a long time under the Pradovit brand which makes this foray into the laser TV a natural progression for the renowned camera and optics equipment maker.
As with all Leica products, the Leica Cine 1 is not just about function but also form. In the respect of the latter, it has a typically puristic Leica design language is reflected in the durable, silver premium aluminum body with a slim automatic dust cover for optimum lens protection.
The perforated plates on the sides, which offers better audio output and effective ventilation, also add to the charm and allure of this gadget.
Under the hood, the Leica Cine 1 packs a triple RGB laser as a light source that Leica claims to deliver “particularly bright images and breathtaking color rendition” and has a service life of over 25,000 hours.
The first UST from Leica further touts an integrated TV tuner that includes a CI slot for pay TV channels and a VIDAA smart TV launcher that opens up the world of streaming entertainment for users.
And with built-in HDMI and USB inputs, more entertainment can be piped through the lens of the Leica Cine 1, including movies on hard drives, and additional players such as Blu-ray players or game consoles.
Rounding up the feature list is the screen mirroring function. Leica said that a laser TV like the Cine 1, consumes significantly less energy than an OLED TV of comparable size while offering 80-100 inches screen size at 4K resolution.
The device further benefits from the camera maker’s Summicron lens with aspherical elements, Texas Instruments DLP chip, and Dolby Atmos audio system. The device measures 60 by 40 cm (24 by 16 inches), and depending on the version (80- or 100-inch screen), it can be placed about 6 to 12 inches from the wall.
Speaking of which… along with the projector, Leica will also sell 80- and 100-inch ambient light-rejecting (ALR) screens too.
The Leica Cine 1 Laser TV will hit the EU markets sometime in Q2 2023. Meanwhile, pricing is not known. However, we heard it would cost US$6,900-7,900, depending on the model. In the meantime, you may learn more about Leica’s first UST projector HERE.
