The range-topping Volkswagen Golf R has just been topped… by itself. 20 years ago, Volkswagen introduced this hotter than GTi hot hatch, and this year, the German automaker celebrates its 20 years with a special model, the Volkswagen Golf R “20 Years”.
Where some anniversary models are merely equipment differences and maybe cosmetics, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R “20 Years” actually has a slight performance bump.
The exclusive model squeezes 13 PS (12.8 HP) more, at 333 PS (328 HP), from its 2.0L four-cylinder turbo engine which also boasts distinctive acoustics that makes its presence felt.
Mated to a DSG gearbox, this special edition hot hatch is capable of wiping the century sprint (0-100 km/h or 0-62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 270 km/h (168 mph).
The Volkswagen Golf R “20 Years” is outfitted with exclusive equipment, including the R Performance package that touts the R-Performance Torque Vectoring with the Vehicle Dynamics Manager, along with two additional drive modes, Special and Drift.
A few other notables include an interior with high-quality decorative trim in Genuine Carbon, a rear roof spoiler, 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels, and Blue R logos. The latter can also be found on the vehicle key cap to remind you that this key belongs to a special vehicle.
The Volkswagen Golf R “20 Years” Edition will be produced in the Wolfsburg factory and it will have a production period limited to around a year, which kind of make it a limited model. It is expected to reach EU markets and North America starting in mid-2022. Meanwhile, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R “20 Years” Edition is available to order now in Germany with prices starting from 59,995 euros (about US$64,096+).
