The concept of omnidirectional wheels is not new. It has seen implementations, including a toy and even on a real car. But this omnidirectional wheel here is not the omnidirectional wheel you expect. The wheel is a ball.
Each wheel that this custom LEGO Technic car rolls on is a 52 mm Duplo ball. LEGO enthusiast/LEGO engineering extraordinaire on YouTube, Brick Technology, has successfully implemented ball wheels on a LEGO MOC and the result is pretty, well, futuristic.
With this built, Brick Technology also highlighted the complexity of using balls as wheels. The verdict, IMHO, is, it is not practical. If we were to implement ball wheels in the real world, the cost would be unimaginable and that’s not to mention how delicate the system would be.
But notwithstanding the cons, the futuristic factor is through the roof. If you are into futuristic vehicles, be sure to check out this brilliant LEGO Technic build. Trust me. It is going impressive.
