Netflix and broker of fine and decorative art, jewelry, and collectibles, Sotheby’s has come together to introduce a one-of-a-kind New Balance sneaker to promote the streaming platform’s latest feature film, Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up.
It was a good show, btw. If you haven’t watched it, I suggest giving it a go. The movie may very well reignite Jennifer Lawrence’s career. Anyways, what makes the Don’t Look Up Dibiasky New Balance 550 sneakers extra special is that it is embellished with 4.5 billion-year-old pallasite meteorite (symbiote-free, of course).
Sotheby’s has described the kicks as “one-of-a-kind extra-terrestrial sneaker” and “literally out of this world” because it kind of is with the pallasite meteorite that was discovered in the dry bed of the river Hekandue – Magadan District, Russia.
The super unique pair of kicks is the work of art of Manchester-based sneaker designer Matt Burgess of MattB Customs, with the New Balance 550 serving as the canvas for the fragments of the Seymchan meteorite. The meteorite was cut using a high-pressure water jet to within a millimeter of Matt’s design.
All told, the custom Don’t Look Up Dibiasky New Balance 550 boasts 34 fragments containing extra-terrestrial crystals of gleaming olivine and peridot, raining in hues from emerald to amber.
The shoe is, as mentioned, one of a kind and only in US Size 10. But it does not matter because one, the US$13,200 shoe has been sold, and second, nobody in the right mind would be wearing it out. Or would he/she?
