With hundreds of new phones coming onto the market each year, it is hard for handset makers to stand out from the competition unless the device in question is a Galaxy or Pixel device, or an iPhone. More so if the device is a mid-range device. But Oppo, as always, found a way to shine in the sea of smartphones.
The brand’s latest mid-ranger, the seventh iteration of the Reno series, Reno7, is rocking a “flagship-grade” 22 nm process image sensor co-developed with Sony. The said image sensor, the IMX709 super-sensitive cat-eye lens, is a 32 MP sensor featuring Oppo self-developed RGBW image fusion unit and “front hardware-level DOL-HDR.”
Strangely, though, such effort is, believe it or not, for the selfie camera. That’s right. This “highlight” is the front-facing camera. I guess Oppo is targeting influencers, Internet personalities, and vloggers? Anyways, the most attractive part about this new phone is, this so-called flagship-grade image sensor can be found on both the Pro and non-Pro models.
Beyond the co-developed front-facing sensor, there is really nothing to shout about. I mean, it really is just another handset in the cut-throat smartphone market. However, credit has to be given to its aesthetic which has the iPhone 13/iPhone 4 vibe to it. You know, the squared-off edge and the metal band around it? Yeah, that.
Not going to lie. It is minimal and strangely, sleek – notwithstanding that the design is a direct rip-off of Apple’s. Reno7’s design is on a different spectrum to the somewhat artistic Find X3 series we saw earlier this year.
Keep going to find the overview of the specifications of the Reno7 5G and Reno7 Pro 5G. Oh, wait. We neglected to mention another highlight. The Pro model has a pulsating LED light surrounding the camera bump that serves as eye candy and as notification alerts when the phone is placed face down. Fancy.
The Oppo Reno7 5G and Reno7 Pro 5G are available to order in China with a starting price of 2,699 yuan and 3,699 yuan (around US$424 and US$581), respectively. Though official availability is December 03.
Along with the mainline Reno7 duo, Oppo has also introduced a third version, the Reno7 SE (that looks strangely similar to the Reno5), with a lower starting price at 2,199 yuan (about US$346).
