Back in May when the Project Q, which is now known as Portal, was revealed, Sony also offered a preview of PlayStation’s first true wireless sound earbuds. Fast forward to August, it was revealed that this PlayStation first is called Pulse Explore TWS earbuds.
In addition, the video game console maker also revealed a pair of over-the-ear wireless headsets called Pulse Elite. Both the Pulse Explore and Pulse Elite promise to deliver low latency lossless audio from PS5 and the new PlayStation Portal using PlayStation Link wireless technology.
We have high expectations of the audio from the TWS earbuds and headphones because both Explore and Elite will be the first PlayStation audio devices to use custom-designed planar magnetic drivers. This tech is normally reserved for audiophile-grade headphones.
The Pulse Explore is the first in the mass consumer market to rock planar magnetic driver technology. It is incredible considering the size of the earbuds.
Meanwhile, the Elite further features a retractable boom mic with AI-enhanced noise rejection capable of filtering background sounds. It will be supplied with a charging hanger for convenient charging and storage.
To enjoy the low latency connection offered by PlayStation Link, you will need to use the included USB adapter which is a bit of a bummer. I guess Link was an afterthought; not quite a wireless tech developed with PS5.
Both Explore and Elite are Bluetooth devices too, which allows them to be connected to a PlayStation Link-supported device (PS5, PC, Mac, or PlayStation Portal), and a Bluetooth-supported device, such as your phone, for example. This allows users to take a call when playing on PS5.
Availability and pricing are yet to be announced.
