Meet The Newest Record Holder For The World’s Fastest Remote Controlled Jet-powered Car

Engineering YouTuber ProjectAir aka James Whomsley who created the RC Cybertruck Hydrofoil boat is now officially the record holder for the Fastest Speed Achieved by a Remote Controlled (RC) Jet-powered Car on Guinness World Records.

What started to be a desire to build an RC powered by a jet engine to go fast became a quest to break the record for Fastest Speed Achieved by a Remote Controlled (RC) Jet-powered Car which stood at 93.2 mph/150 km/h.

The design is based on real-life land speed record cars which have a design that is essentially a chassis and bodywork built around a jet engine. The result is a vehicle that looks more like a fighter jet on land or a missile than an automobile.

James’ jet-powered land speed contender is powered by a JetCat P220-RXi micro jet turbine that puts out an incredible 220 N (20.3 kilograms or about 50 pounds) of thrust which could potentially power an RC jet to up to 300 mph (483 km/h).

The microjet engine is mounted on a custom aluminum chassis built on an ARRMA 1/7 Limitless V2 Speed Bash Roller and in addition to the electronics and stuff, it is equipped with two in-board disc brakes – one front and one rear – on the main drive shaft to haul the RC car to a stop.

Whomsley made his speed run with his jet-powered RC car at the ROSSA speed event at Llanbedr in Wales on July 01, 2023, where it set the record for the Fastest Speed Achieved by a Remote Controlled (RC) Jet-powered Car with 94.76 mph/152.50 km/h.

The official record would have been even faster if not for a mishap in which the nosecone broke off while making the attempt. That run clocked in at a spectacular 137.19 mph or 220.78 km/h. Because the car was considered as not in one piece, that attempt did not make the record book.
