Most sports car makers are fond of making out-of-this-world concepts that you know probably not going to get produced. But Porsche isn’t the most sports car maker. Let’s just say that reality has kept the designers’ imagination in check. And that is a good thing because you know those cars the designers penned will likely make it to production and because of that, we are hopeful that the Porsche Mission X Electric Hypercar Concept would go down the same path.
The Porsche Mission X is a car to be excited about because it is unlike anything from the German automaker we have seen in recent years. The LeMans lineage is unmistakable and if the silhouette isn’t enough of a hint of that, then perhaps the LeMans-style doors attached to the A-pillar and the roof that opens upwards to the front should.
However, it is not huge like most hypercars or LeMans cars. It has a dimension closer to that of the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, measuring about 4.5 meters (14.76 feet) long and 2 meters (6.56 feet) wide, and a wheelbase of 2.73 meters (8.96 feet). It is a compact hypercar, as Porsche described it.
With a low-slung bodywork that looks more at home on the track than anything else, the Porsche Mission X is under 1.2 meters (3.94 feet) tall.
The powertrain isn’t disclosed but Porsche has expressed the desire for the Mission X to be the fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife and it would tout a power-to-weight ratio of around one PS per kilogram.
Moreover, it will achieve downforce values that are well in excess of those delivered by the current 911 GT3 RS. And finally, it will have a 900-volt system architecture and would charge about twice as fast as Porsche Taycan Turbo S.
The battery will be installed centrally behind the vehicle’s seats in what is known as an ‘e-core layout’ that centers the mass, much like a mid-engine car.
We also know that the Porsche Mission X will roll on 20-inch wheels front and 21-inch wheels rear, and it will have “almost transparent aeroblades on the rear axle that act like turbines that better cool the brakes.”
In addition, it will rock a lightweight glass dome with an exoskeleton made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) that extends over both occupants.
Porsche chose to debut the modernized Porsche crest on the Mission X which goes to show the significance of this car and it will probably not stop at the concept phase.
