USB can charge/power many devices but a typically high power consumption hair straightening iron? Well, apparently it can too because there is the Elecom NOGI USB Hair Straightening Iron. Also, apparently, NOGI isn’t the first. There are even rechargeable versions floating in the market.
Anyhoo, so yeah, USB-powered hair straightening iron is a thing and it will be perfect for traveling/on-the-go grooming because it is small and can be easily powered by a USB power brick (not included) or even a power bank, or even a USB cigarette lighter socket in your automobile. Whichever the power source may be, it would require to output 5V/3A, says Elecom.
The Elecom NOGI USB Hair Straightening Iron is just 170 mm (6.7 inches) long and weighs barely anything at 87 grams (3 ounces!). It may be small but this little guy is no slouch; it heats to up to 190°C (374°F) in around 4 minutes. It is made of heat-resistant material and comes with a cap that can be closed immediately after use.
Speaking of the cap. It is not the only safety feature; the power switch/temperature level selector is hidden inside the device which can only be accessed when the hair straightening iron is open. Moreover, the device will auto-power off in 30 minutes.
All told, the device offers 3-step temperature control. Each time you press the switch, it changes the temperature from high to low. In addition to 190°C, it also offers 100°C (212°F) and 140°C (284°C) “extension wig mode” which will be perfect for users who have thin or soft hair and are afraid of damaging their hair with high heat.
The heating surfaces are ceramic coating plates and have a cushion plate design to aid in dispersing the force on the hair and gently distributing the heat.
The Elecom NOGI USB Hair Straightening Iron is available in Japan from Elecom Japan online store as well as the Elecom store on Yahoo! Japan, Amazon Japan, and Rakuten, for 3,960 yen (around US$28).
