Ever wanted to be able to bring your couch everywhere you go? Well, if you do, then you will wish that Couch in an Envelope is real. Couch in an Envelope is exactly what it says it is. It is a flat-packed couch that slipped into a package like, well, an envelope. It is a super cool concept.
The concept was created by SPACE10, an independent research and design lab supported by IKEA, in collaboration with design studio Panter&Tourron, the Couch in an Envelope is a result of using AI to challenge design archetypes of a couch. The design challenged the notion of a typical couch that is heavy, bulky, and difficult to transport.
SPACE10 collaborated with Panter&Tourron to reimagine the couch as a light, adaptable piece of furniture while remaining comfortable with the aid of generative AI. The result is a piece of flat-packed, modular furniture that weighs just 10 kilograms (22 pounds).
In addition, it is sustainable too, thanks to the aluminum frame which can be recycled over and over again, and the cellulose-based fabrics and mycelium foam that would be fully compostable or biodegradable. It has a toolless and screw-less design which not only makes the concept couch easy to assemble and disassemble but also makes it easier to recycle.
Being lightweight and space-saving makes it easier to transport which in turn reduces its carbon footprint too. The durable, biodegradable, vacuum-sealed envelope packaging allows for ease of storage and stacking while remaining presentable at the storefront.
On the usability aspect, the Couch in an Envelope features adjustable ‘wings’ that can be lowered or raised to seat two or three people. Thanks to the modular design, multiple couches can be placed together to create a larger seating space.
Because it is lightweight and easy to transport, users will be more inclined to move it with them when they relocated. This is one way of extending its lifespan – in addition to the ease of disassembly feature which allows the couch to be a hand-me-down item.
It is a brilliant concept, especially for users who rent spaces. You can learn more about the SPACE10 Couch in an Envelope by Panter&Tourron over at SPACE10.com.
