Think Sonos and I bet you are going to think soundbars or IKEA collaboration because those are the things we have seen coming from the American speaker maker in recent years. Well, mostly. But recently, Sonos reminded us of its root with the reveal of the Sonos Era 300 and Era 100.
Billed as the next-generation of smart speakers, the Era 300 is a rather unusual-looking one-piece wireless speaker that offers spatial audio with Dolby Atmos while Era 100 is a successor to the Sonos One, featuring all-new hardware and software with next-gen acoustics and an updated design that promise to deliver detailed stereo sound and deep bass.
The Era 300 boasts no less than six powerful drivers optimally positioned around the front, sides, and top, it will engulf you with audio no matter where you are in the room. The Era 300 is also the brand’s first speaker that delivers multi-channel surround sound when used as a home theater setup’s rear speakers. You can pair two speakers with Arc or Beam (Gen 2) to create a supercharged Dolby Atmos experience.
The Era 100, on the other hand, features two angled tweeters that deliver crisp high frequencies left and right for a rich stereo experience, with a large mid-woofer producing the low-frequency thumping “unexpected from a single compact speaker.” Moreover, two Era 100 can be paired as rears with your soundbar to boost the surround sound, or pair two up to form a stereo setup.
Both Era 100 and Era 300 feature a new physical user interface, including a new capacitive volume slider – in addition to control via the companion app, Apple AirPlay 2, Sonos Trueplay self-calibrating technology, and support wireless streaming over WiFi or Bluetooth, or playback from sources via an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter.
Both models are made with post-consumer recycled plastic, built to last, and reduce the use of adhesives, using screws where possible, to promote repairability.
The new Sonos Era 300 and Era 100 Smart Speakers will be available globally on March 28, 2023, for US$249 and US$449, respectively. They are available to order on Sonos.com.
