Appropriately piloted by a man dressed as Elvis, the Ryse Recon electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) craft was recently flown over the old Las Vegas strip. And, because the hexacopter is classified as an ultralight aircraft, it doesn’t require a pilot’s license to fly. Hence The King here.
The Recon can carry a max load of 250 lbs and operates using six individual rotors and batteries. It has a top speed of around 63MPH, an altitude of 400 feet (for FAA reasons), and a max flight time of 25 minutes. That’s just enough to get me to the grocery store and back at full throttle.
The eVTOL will be available later this year for $150,000. Am I going to buy one? Probably not, considering that’s a lot of money to spend for me to crash into a neighbor’s house. The company advertises the craft is “as easy to operate as an ATV,” which I do believe because I’ve found ATVs are also incredibly easy to crash into things.
