Metaphysic Pulled Off Deepfake Elvis Performance At America’s Got Talent

I am sure most of us are familiar with what deepfake is by now but what some of us may not know is that deepfaking has gone real-time. At the season finale of the seventeenth season of America’s Got Talent, Metaphysic, a tech company that uses AI to create hyperreal content, pulled an incredible “real-time deepfake” onstage.

In this deepfake act at AGT, the team “resurrected” the King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Presley. This isn’t quite like how Salvador Dali was brought back to life, though. It was played out live onstage. The performer, Elvis tribute singer Emilio Santoro in his best Elvis getup, was joined by backup singers Makayla Philips (an AGT season 13 semi-finalist) and Las Vegas entertainer Lorena Peril.

Santoro performed “Hound Dog” and “You’re the Devil In Disguise” in front of an array of special cameras onstage. But cast on the screen behind the stage was not Santoro’s face, it was the King of Rock & Roll. The execution was flawless. It looks like a scene from one of Elvis’s performances. It was super surreal. There was more.

Some time into the song “You’re the Devil in Disguise,” Simon Cowell, deepfaked by Daniel Emmett – an opera singer who made it to the top 10 of AGT season 13 – and then, there was a revelation; judges Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara were the backup singers! Well, they were deepfaked onto the backup singers, of course.

The entire experience was pretty damn surreal and a show of how far deepfake technology has progressed. Absolutely mindblowing! Here, have a look at the video yourself:
