There is certainly no lacking of super cool incense holders in the market. However, I can’t help but notice that most of them, if not all, had that same supernatural or zen vibe. I guess it is kind of what incense is about? Maybe? But that vibe may not be for everyone or every interior decor. This is where WTAPS Monolith Incense Chamber stood out.
WTAPS Monolith Incense Chamber has none of those vibes. In fact, it is the opposite. It is uber contemporary and super industrial – thanks to the monolith form that has a reinforced concrete design, complete with a huge crack to show off the “steel bars” within.
The monolith features chips and cracks like well-worn concrete while its pedestal has “air bubbles” aka bugholes as they would have on actual concrete. the base is also where you find minimal embossed branding.
While it does have the piece of brutalist architecture, it is, sadly, not made of concrete. Instead, it is made from a combination of resin, aluminum, brass, and steel. Because it is an incense chamber also separates it from the pack.
Speaking of which, the monolith is designed to be separated from the pedestal, allowing incense to be placed inside the hollow interior.
And oh, the set of raised numbers (35°40’11.6N, 139°42’32.4”E) on the monolith? It is the GPS coordinates of the brand’s store in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. The GPS coordinates have long been a common design motif in many WTAPS collections.
It is one of the most extraordinary incenser holders/burners we have seen thus far but as cool as it is, it comes at a high price. The WTAPS Monolith Incense Chamber will run you back at an over-the-top-for-any-incense holder 28,600 yen, or about US$210 based on today’s going rate.
