The future of Audi models will be even more immersive than a gigantic 31-inch cinema display because it is going VR. Like, you know, letting you, the real passengers, enjoy VR in the car.
That’s right. VR. In. A. Car. Believe it. Audi is the first automaker in the world to bring virtual reality entertainment from holoride into series production. Starting as soon as this summer, back seat passengers can put on virtual reality glasses and immerse in various media formats, including games, films, and interactive content.
Hopefully, none of those content requires you to open doors! Remember Johnny English Strikes Again? You know, it could happen. Nah, just kidding. It probably won’t… right?
Anyhoo, the key highlight of this in-car version of VR entertainment is the virtual content adapts to the driving movements of the car in real-time.
Here’s what will happen:
“Behind holoride there is a technology that adapts virtual content to the car’s driving movements in real time: For example, if the car is taking a right turn, the spaceship in the imaginary world will also fly to the right. If the car accelerates, the spaceship speeds up too. Initiated by Audi, development of this innovative VR or XR (extended reality) technology is being advanced and commercialized for different manufacturers by the tech entertainment startup holoride.”
Well, it certainly sounds like a lot of fun. This new technology was introduced at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in the U.S. where visitors get to experience holoride first-hand in a moving vehicle.
Starting from June 2022, Audi models with the latest upgrade of the modular entertainment toolkit (MIB 3) will be holoride-capable. Holoride (stylized as holoride) is a creative VR content studio that combines navigational and car data with XR (extended reality).
And here’s a technical graphic of how it works for all the geeks out there:
