Whatever kind of cooling “technology” you find on today’s gaming smartphones, it’d be passive cooling. Unlike nubia’s Red Magic, which has implemented an actual fan – in addition to the passive cooling – since the introduction of Red Magic 3.
The new Red Magic 7 Series is no different. With the new Red Magic gaming smartphone, you can actually see the miniature fan, which maxes out at 20,000 RPM, in action with the transparent model. Very cool.
The fan works in conjunction with a vapor chamber liquid-cooled heat dissipation plate to remove heat rapidly. Cooling is all the more important with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 powering the device as the new SoC is notorious when it comes to heat generation.
Like the Red Magic 6, the Red Magic 7 has two models: the standard model and the Pro model that has all the bells and whistles.
Speaking of the Pro model, it stands out as the first gaming smartphone to rock an under-display camera. It (the Pro model) further boasts an independent gaming processor, dubbed Red Core 1.
Also found on the Pro model is a 135 W “Magic Flash” charging that can top the device’s 5,000 mAh battery in just 15 minutes – which is an absolutely mind-boggling speed!
The non-Pro is not too shabby either. It gets 120 W Magic Flash charging that is capable of topping the 4,500 mAh battery to full in just 17 minutes. Oddly but not unwelcome is, either device comes packaged with an industry-first 165 W GaN (Gallium Nitride) charger which you can use to power/charge your laptop too.
Display aspect, the Pro model gets a 120 Hz 6.8-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a blazing 960 Hz touch sampling rate while the standard model is outfitted with a 165 Hz 6.8 Hz AMOLED display with 720 Hz touch sampling rate.
Both devices tout LDPPR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage but the Pro further benefits from RAM BOOST that kicks up the memory performance by 10%. Pro also promised up to 60% frame rate stability.
On the imaging department, both camera systems get a tri-camera setup (64 MP main, 8 MP super wide-angle, and a 2 MP macro) but with a different layout.
The Pro further touts a 16 MP under-display camera over at the front while the standard model gets an 8 MP selfie camera on its narrow forehead.
Other highlights include a 3-mic setup, Magic GPU, a dedicated button to enter gaming mode, a 3.5 mm headphone jack (!), Wi-Fi 6 Enhanced Edition, stereo speaker with DTS-X Ultra support, 500 Hz touch sampling rate shoulder touch buttons, and customizable RGB light on the back cover.
nubia is taking pre-orders in China now, with the Red Magic 7 having a starting price of 3,899 yuan (about US$616) and the Red Magic 7 Pro, starting at 4,799 yuan (around US$758).
The aforementioned transparent model costs a premium. Red Magic 7 has a starting price of 4,899 yuan and Red Magic 7 Pro has 7,499 yuan (roughly US$774 and US$1,185) sticker. The former is offered in a choice of 12 GB + 256 GB and 16 GB + 512 GB configurations while the latter is only available in 18 GB + 1 TB (!?) configuration.
Meanwhile, the international community can learn more about the Red Magic 7 over at the brand’s global website.
