Following the Sony Xperia 1 and Xperia 10, the Sony Xperia 5 is also getting its fifth generation. The new Sony Xperia 5 V is a mid-range device that sits in between the flagship Xperia 1 and entry-level Xperia 10 and is aimed at the young and trendy who take mobile photography, selfie included, seriously.
The design of the new Xperia 5 [UK] remains largely the same with some subtle changes. It now has a chamfered edge with a step-up design. It is a strange design that looks like a regular phone with a chamfered edge and an additional back piece slapped on top.
The chamfered design can be found on the camera module which appears to be more pronounced than its predecessor and the camera unit is now in the matching color with the phone’s body that lends it a more uniform look. Sony has further cleaned up the rear by locating the flash on the camera unit.
Another notable design/spec change is that it now has just two cameras. Sony has decided to drop the telephoto camera. But on the bright side, it now has a larger main sensor which is the same 52 MP 1/1.35” Exmor T for mobile sensor found on the Xperia 1 V.
A 12 MP 1/2.5” Exmor T for mobile sensor paired with an ultrawide lens with a 16 mm focal length, and dual-pixel AF joins the main snapper to complete the dual-camera setup.
Around the front, a 12 MP 1/2.9” Exmor T for mobile sensor camera shares the front with a 120 Hz 6.1” 21:9 FHD+ HDR OLED (2,520 x 1,080 pixels) display and front-firing stereo speakers.
Running the clockwork is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2 chip, along with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB UFS storage, expandable up to 1 TB via microSDXC support.
Other notables include Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, dual SIM (nano + eSIM), Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, BT LE Audio, NFC, USB 3.2 (Type C interface), fingerprint sensor, support Hi-Resolution Audio, Hi-Resolution Audio Wireless (LDAC), 3.5 mm audio jack, 360 Reality Audio Certified, 5000 mAh battery that supports USB PD and Qi wireless charging, the usual positioning (A-GPS, A-GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, QZSS), and water resistant (IPX5/IPX8) and dustproof (IP6X).
The Sony Xperia 5 V has been announced for Europe with a £849/€999 sticker (about US$1,070+).
