In the world of motorsports, the Italian luxury sports car marque Maserati has unveiled its latest track creation, the Maserati GT2. The race car, which has been through a series of intensive tests since its announcement in March, is the House of Trident’s ticket back to GT competitions.
Maserati has been away from serious track competitions for more than a decade now. The marque’s last outing from 2005 to 2010 saw it dominating the track with the MC12. The new Maserati GT2, as the name implies, has been developed to comply with GT2 regulations.
Described as “an exceptional synthesis between Maserati’s past, present, and future,” the Maserati GT2 draws on the living legacy of the MC12; it expresses the best potential, in the racing version, of the MC20 super sports car. So, yeah, it is largely based on the road-going MC20 which means it is powered by a Made-in-Modena 3.0L Nettuno V6 twin-turbo engine that produces a beefy 621 horsepower and 730 Nm (538 lb-ft) of torque.
Maserati said that it has taken the Nettuno V6 “to the extreme”, so the power output may be more but the eventual output is dependent on the BoP (Balance of Performance) of the race it has entered.
Key highlights include an ultra-light carbon fiber central monocoque, polycarbonate windscreen and side windows, adjustable rear wing, quick-release removable bodywork, minimized ride heights, extended front splitter, fully flat floor, aggressive rear diffuser, and improved cooling.
It reportedly has air conditioning which is kind of uncommon for a fully-fledged GT2-compliant race car. The new Maserati GT2 Race Car will make its track debut at the final stages of the 2023 Fanatec GT European Series and is due to participate in the entire 2024 season.
