All the features and specs can be confusing when mix with all the marketing talks. It is almost as if Samsung is doing it as a smokescreen to cover up the lack of new features on a brand-new model. Anyhoo, so yeah, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 was revealed earlier today (or yesterday, depending on where you are) with the Galaxy Z Flip5 which arguably has more to offer over its predecessor.
But the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 does have one very important upgrade: it also has the Flex Hinge which allows it to, finally, close completely flat. The new integrated hinge module is lighter and more compact and features a dual rail structure, diffusing external impacts.
In addition, it also benefits from a more powerful and energy-efficient SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy.
The displays appear to be the same. The secondary/external display aka the Cover Screen aka the Flex Window is a 6.2-in ch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate (48-120 Hz) and 2,316 x 904, resolution.
The main display is also the same 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X “Infinity Flex Display” with 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate (1-120 Hz) and 2,176 x 1,812 resolution BUT it is now brighter, at 1,750 nits versus the last-gen’s 1,200 nits.
The cameras appear to be of the same hardware. The main camera system comprises a 12 MP ultra-wide camera (f/2.2, 1.12 µm, 123° FoV), a 50 MP wide-angle camera (Dual Pixel AF, OIS, f/1.8, 1.0 µm, 85° FoV), and a 10 MP telephoto camera (PDAF, f/2.4, OIS, 1.0 µm, 36° FoV, 3x optical zoom).
The Cover Camera is a 10 MP selfie camera (f/2.2, 1.22 µm, 85° FoV) while the main display is home to a 4 MP under-display camera (f/1.8, 2.0 µm, 80° FoV).
Other highlights include IPX8 support, Armor Aluminum frames, Corning Gorilla Victus 2 on Flex Window and back cover, 5G and LTE radios, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, a side-mounted capacitive fingerprint sensor, support up 2 nano-SIM and an eSIM, Samsung Knox with Samsung Knox Vault, and a 4,400 mAh dual battery that supports 25 W fast charging as well as fast wireless charging 2.0 and reverse wireless charging.
It is worth noting that the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is a tad more compact and lighter than the last-gen device – thanks in part to the new hinge design. It measures 67.1 x 154.9 x 13.4 mm folded and 129.9 x 154.9 x 6.1 mm unfolded and weighs 253g. For context, the Z Fold4 is 67.1 x 155.1 x 14.2 mm folded, 130.1 x 155.1 x 6.3 mm unfolded, and tips the scales at 263g.
Oh, it also has a newly designed S-Pen that is flatter.
The new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is available for pre-order in select markets starting today (July 26, 2023), with general availability starting on August 11, 2023. Over in the U.S., it is available for pre-order with a starting price of US$1,799.99.
