By the time you are reading this, the husband and wife team has already embarked on the world-first electric adventure to showcase the capability of EVs and also highlight the positive action against the climate crisis on a Nissan Ariya electric SUV.
As some of you may have heard, extreme temperatures – particularly, extreme cold weather – affect the battery’s ability to hold the charge and so it will be interesting to see hold this little SUV holds up when it travels from the North to the South Pole.
The entire journey will see this adventure-ready Nissan Ariya covering 27,000 kilometers (16,777 miles). During its journey, not only the vehicle has to cope with extreme temperatures and weather; the vehicle will have to deal with extreme terrains and environments too, including ice fields, deep snow, steep mountain climbs, and desert dunes.
The vehicle was specially prepared for Arctic Trucks but mods are kept to the minimum. The most obvious would be the increased ride height, the enormous 39-inch BF Goodrich tires, and the flared wheel arches. Battery and drivetrain remain stock. It should. How else would you demonstrate just how capable and versatile the Nissan Ariya is, right?
There are a couple of less obvious mods, including an integrated espresso machine in the trunk and a drone up on the roof in the utility unit which the adventurers can launch to scout ahead and also capture the breathtaking environments.
So, what about charging the vehicle? Well, that’s the other innovation. The Ariya has a portable, renewable energy unit that will charge the Ariya in the polar regions in tow. The towable prototype includes a packable, lightweight wind turbine and solar panels that will take advantage of high winds and long daylight hours to provide a charge for the EV’s battery when the crew stops for rest.
