Much like the Project Geländewagen we saw a few years ago, Project Mondo G is a rolling art piece. Though it is without a matching scale model. I don’t quite see a point here but this bizarre creation drew my attention nonetheless.
The Project Mondo G is essentially a Mercedes-Benz G-Class dressed up with Moncler’s puffer jacket. Or jackets because it looks like each wheel is wearing a puffer jacket that looks like puffed-up tire warmers, plus there is another puffer jacket engulfing the entire rear cabin and roof – complete with a huge zipper.
The zipper is a practical reference to the versatility and variability of both products: vehicle and jacket said Mercedes-Benz. Here’s what Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG has to say about this rolling art piece:
“The collaboration with Moncler inspired us to create a real iconic sculpture on wheels – a very bold design statement: our PROJECT MONDO G. Based on our design philosophy Sensual Purity, this art piece merges extremely contrasting forms and surfaces: spacecraft shiny materials with a used patina look; strong geometry of the G-Class with organic forms of Moncler puffer jackets. Two strong luxury brands offer an extraordinary new experience by combining automotive and fashion world united in one piece. Because of over-dimensional and exaggerated language of forms it’s polarizing art to set new impulses and trends.”
Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG
The entire setup is pretty much a giant puffer jacket, sans any physical connection between each piece. The puffer wheels and the spacecraft’s shiny materials make the vehicle look like a moon vehicle. It actually looks quite surreal. You know, something quite otherworldly.
And yes, the Mercedes-Benz x Moncler Project Mondo G is an actual automobile but it is referred to as an “art piece” and no, I don’t believe you can buy one.
It was launched at Moncler’s “The Art of Genius” live show at the London Fashion Week on February 21, 2023.
It was paired with models who are, well, wrapped in a puffer jacket, of course.
