Commemorating the sophomore season of the Extreme E last month at Punta del Este, Uruguay, luxury watchmaker ZENITH has partnered with Extreme E for a special watch based on the watchmaker’s DEFY chronograph timepiece.
For those for don’t already know, Extreme E is an FIA-sanctioned international off-road racing. And no, it is not just another rally race. Vehicles competing in the Extreme E are spec silhouette electric SUVs and much like Dakar, race in remote parts of the world.
Extreme E is not just off-road racing in electric SUVs; the racing locations are carefully chosen to raise awareness for some aspects of climate change. That said Extreme E is committed to decarbonizing transportation and preserving these racing locations.
Anyways, back to the timepiece. The ZENITH DEFY Extreme E Energy X Prix Watch, as it is called, is a lovely timepiece made from carbon fiber and titanium and features striking purple accents that evoke streaks of lightning in a stormy sky.
Waterproof and crushproof, the ZENITH DEFY Extreme E Energy X Prix Watch is also the world’s lightest and most robust 1/100th of a second chronograph that has been tried and tested on the electric rally’s off-road courses.
Moreover, the rubber strap is infused with materials from upcycled Continental CrossContact tires that were used in the first season’s races while the case’s lid coating is made from E-grip recycled tires and the plating covering is made from parts of an Extreme E racing tarpaulin.
So, yeah, it is not just a handsome, functional timepiece with electric motorsports inspiration but it also tried to be as sustainable as it possibly could.
The watch is powered by the El Primero 9004 movement – the fastest automatic high-frequency chronograph calibre in production and boasts a minimum of 50 hours of power reserve powers. It is water resistant to 20 ATM (200 meters).
If you are down, the ZENITH DEFY Extreme E Energy X Prix Watch is available now from ZENITH brick-and-mortar stores as well as online boutiques for US$27,100.
