The new Honda Civic Type R has just been officially revealed, well, kind of. The reveal isn’t quite a complete reveal. Based on the 11th generation Honda Civic Hatchback, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R is the most powerful Civic Type R yet that has recently set a new production car front-wheel drive track record at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan.
Track-ready, Nürburgring-tuned, and tested, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder VTEC engine with undisclosed numbers and mated to an updated 6-speed manual transmission and a Helical LSD. TBH, the reveal is really an introduction to the exterior and interior.
So here are what we know so far. The new CTR is rocking widened front and rear fenders which under you can find 19-inch aluminum wheels with reverse rim structure, wrapped in 265/30ZR19 93Y Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, developed exclusively for Type R.
Peeking behind the front wheels are Brembo 4-pot aluminum caliper paired with Brembo 350 mm ventilated 2-piece disc brake. The car further features an active exhaust valve that allows users to tweak the exhaust note. It has an unusual 3 tailpipes that peek out from the center of the rear diffuser. We noted that the center tailpipe is of a slightly larger diameter.
Also at the rear, up on the trunk lid is a Type R exclusive rear spoiler in gloss black finish with lightweight aluminum diecast stay for powerful downforce while minimizing drag.
On the inside, the red/black cabin features a Type R exclusive Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching, an aluminum teardrop-style shift knob with gear markings in Type R red, a pair of body-hugging Honda Type R seats in bright red, a 6/4 split-fold rear seat, a Honda CONNECT display, dual-zone automatic climate control, 10.2-inch digital graphic meter for Type R +R LED rev indicator, and an aluminum center console panel.
Now, for the interesting bits for folks who love hitting the tracks. According to Honda Japan, the new CTR will have an electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h (112 mph). However, with the Japan model, it is equipped with a function to turn off the speed limiter when on 13 domestic JAF/FIA-certified circuits.
In addition, the in-vehicle application, Honda LogR, features a Type R dedicated data logger app that offers a boatload of drive information from oil and water temperature, boost pressure, tire pressure, and whatnot, critical to racing.
Moreover, the new 2023 Honda Civic Type R offers 3 drive modes: +R, SPORT, and COMFORT, each with customizable parameters which will be retained even when the engine is restarted. The selection of the drive is through an up/down switch and a dedicated +R button.
When in +R mode, Honda LogR driving information is customized and displayed on the +R dedicated meter. Furthermore, an LED rev indicator will appear on the top to help achieve smooth shifting in extreme driving conditions. Basically, it is like a full-fledged race car.
Japan’s model will be offered in five body colors: championship white, sonic gray pearl, crystal black pearl, frame red, and racing blue pearl. It is not clear if it will be the same for other markets.
The 2023 Honda Civic Type R will go on sale in Japan starting in September 2022. As for the U.S. market and Europe markets, they will be launching this fall and in early 2023, respectively. More details, including pricing, will be offered closer to the launch. Meanwhile, eager petrol heads who read Japanese can learn more about the new Civic Type R HERE [JP].
