A real sports car is, of course, gas-powered and so if you don’t care about the environment, then congratulation, you are free to buy a real sports car like the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS.
The name itself sounds powerful and fast, and it is. The 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS shares the same naturally aspirated flat-six engine found on the 911 GT3 Cup racing car and the 911 GT3 series production model.
This high-revving, mid-mounted gas-powered motor produces 500 PS (493 HP) – an extra 80 PS (79 HP) over the 718 Cayman GT4 and turns out 20 Nm (14.8 lb-ft) of torque – at 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).
The powerful motor is mated to the Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK) that shifts through its seven gears at lightning speed – which the driver can choose to use the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel or the re-designed selector lever on the center console to do so.
The combination of the flat-six engine and the PDK enables the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS to wipe the century sprint (0-100 km/h; 0-62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds before peaking out at a top speed of 315 km/h (196 mph) some seconds later.
The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is not just compact; it is super lightweight too, tipping the scales at only 1,415 kilograms (3,120 lbs) – that’s 35 kilograms (77 lbs) less than a PDK-equipped non-RS 718 GT4.
The weight reduction is made possible by the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), lightweight carpets, lightweight glass for the rear window, lightweight door panels et cetera.
Additionally, the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is presented with an aero package that includes a new fixed rear wing with a swan-neck attachment, aerodynamically optimized underbody paneling with a connected rear diffuser, the multi-adjustable front diffuser, and the new front spoiler lip with flow-around side blades.
All told, the aero on the RS generates around 25% more downforce over the GT4 when in the track-only Performance mode. The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is for folks who appreciate unadulterated driving, both on the road and on the track.
The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is available to order as we speak with a base price of US$141,700. Delivery will begin in December. But those who demand hard-hitting performance made for the track may want to hold out for the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport racing version which has just made its world premiere at the LA Auto Show.
